Tbilisi Biennale of Stage Design 2018

Tbilisi Biennale of Stage Design was initiated by the Valerian Gunia Union of Young Theatre Artists – the OISTAT National Center of Georgia in 2016.

The Biennale aims to build conditions for professional development of young stage designers and for intercultural dialogue.

The Biennale is a unique platform created for young scenographers and enabling them to present themselves and their projects; to review and assess the process ongoing in this field of art, to share their creative ideas, to arrange professional discussions, to plan and develop joint projects.

Tbilisi Biennale included an international exhibition and the educational program Masters’ Lab.

Regional Forum of Young Performing and Visual Artists was an associated event held within the framework of the Biennale.

INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION

The main component of the biennale – the international exhibition – was held at the Tbilisi History Museum on 11-18 October 2018.

The national pavilions of seven countries – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Canada, Russia, Hungary, Ukraine – were set up. 

In addition, Georgia was represented by two expositions: the national pavilion of professional stage designers under 35 and the exhibition Aphkhazeti by the students of Georgian scenographer Gogi Alexi-Meskhishvili’s Design School.

MASTERS’ LAB

Tbilisi Biennale of Stage Design includes the educational program Masters’ Lab.

Masters’ Lab aims to enrich young participants with new knowledge and professional skills.

In 2018, experts from various fields were invited to the Masters’ Lab:

•  Pamela Howard, Director/ Scenographer, UK.International Chair in Drama: Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff, Emeritus Professor: University of the Arts, London, and a Visiting Professor Arts University Bournemouth
• Yaron Abulafia, PhD. Performance / Light Designer, Israel/ Netherlands
• Polina Bahktina, Artist, Scenographer, Illustrator, Russia. Curator of the Scenography course at the British Higher School of Design in Moscow
• Yan Kalnberzin, Video and Media Artist, Russia
• Dobrivoje Milijanović, DA, Polymedia Art, SerbiaAssistant Professor at Faculty of Dramatic Arts, Department of Sound Design, teaching Sound Design for Stage

On 12-16 October, the series of master-classes was held at Shota Rustaveli State University of Theatre and Cinema and at Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts.

Over 360 people attended the master-classes.
